What Makes Great Teaching ?

Image
Great teaching takes a lot as we have learned in this class. Teachers have to take a lot of things into consideration when teaching their students. Some of the questions we have been asked in this class has made us look back on how our previous teachers taught us and we found that some of them weren’t the best teachers in some situations or some handled their challenges in good ways. Know that this semester has come to an end, some qualities I think all teachers should have in order to be a great teacher consist of being caring, showing empathy, being patient, listening to their students, and being enthusiastic. Of course there are many more skills and qualities teachers need but we all have to start at the beginning. For this weeks module we were asked to list our   TOP 5  strategies we enjoyed using in this class below you’ll find my list along with a description of how to use that strategy, the skills the strategy included, why it worked for me and a link where you c...

In 2022, why are schools still segregated?

Image
After watching “The Disturbing History of the Suburbs| Adam Ruins Everything” we find out that school segregation is even bigger now than it was in the 1970s which is somewhat shocking to me because  I would’ve thought that as a society we would have changed or did something to solve this problem by now. “Segregated by design” tells us that policies and laws that the United States government has put into place is a main cause of segregation because it puts a negative view on neighborhoods where African Americas live and even African Americans themselves.    As I continued to watch this video the speaker goes on to say that schools are largely funded by property taxes and since property values in white neighborhoods are so much higher than other neighborhoods (African Americans or minorities) there schools get way more money to spend on things for their students. I instantly related to this part of the video because I went to a predominately black school where we di...

What Lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

Image
When we made the decision to be teachers we also made a promise to protect all of our students from anything that may come their way. In the article “Cultural Responsiveness Start with Real Caring” by Zaretta Hammond, an African American 5 th  grade boy is curled up in a ball crying in the corner of the classroom and the teacher did nothing. Although the article didn’t include the back story on why the student was crying, us teachers should never leave our students alone to cry. As Zaretta shared, we should offer a moment of compassion or a gesture of care to our students. Some of the words that I took note off while reading through this weeks module to create my Word It Out included words like challenges, motivate, care, family, push and connection.  My reasoning behind choosing some of these words like challenges is because as teachers we are going to face some challenges along the way the job may not always be easy and we should know this we were once students. Motiv...

How do we talk about issues that matter ?

Taking about issues that matter can sometimes lead to unwanted conflict, so how do you address these sensitive topics? From my experience in school, the way that teachers tried to address issues that matter was not efficient. Making a boring slideshow for your students to look at and making them watch these long videos was always like saying its nap time. The way that my previous teachers tried to address these issues were not opening discussion among classmates but making us more closed off and afraid to say anything.     However, I’m not saying you can not use slideshows and videos to talk about issues that matter, instead I’m suggesting you encourage more discussions among students so that they can speak their mind and hear the thoughts of others.  For example, lets make the slideshows and videos shorter so we do not lose our students attention. Allow students to have a chance to share their opinions or experiences or if they are still closed off, pass out paper...

What is the purpose of Public Schools?

What am i gaining from being here all day? Why do I need this class to pass? When will i ever use this formula in the future? These are all questions you might have asked yourself in the past when trying to figure out what is the purpose of public school. The website https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov defines the purpose of public schools as "The mission of the public education system of this state is to ensure that all Texas children have access to a quality education that enables them to achieve their potential and fully participate now and in the future in the social, economic, and educational opportunities of our state and nation".  To me and from my experience in a public school I would say the purpose of public schools is to ready students for the real world, teach them their basic life skills along with learning new concepts everyday and meeting new people. Public schools offer many different classes based on things you may need to know in the future for example finan...

Why Teach?

Image
Why Teach?    Starting out i never knew what career path i wanted to take, there were so many options to choose from but none ever caught my eyes until the day my baby brother (Jaden) was born. With my mom trying to get back into work after having a new baby I watched him majority of the time while she was away. After watching Jaden over the course of years and watching him grow i got an interest in watching kids, so i started to babysit kids near me. As my interest kept growing i then started joining clubs and classes related to teaching for example, my school had a daycare where students were the teachers and we taught mostly threes, fours, and five year olds. I also joined a club called PALS were we went to nearby elementary/ middle schools and formed friendships with selected children. Soon after COVID happened and in the beginning i was happy because that meant no more school but then i started to realize how much i missed teaching and forming these student to teac...
