What is the purpose of Public Schools?
What am i gaining from being here all day? Why do I need this class to pass? When will i ever use this formula in the future? These are all questions you might have asked yourself in the past when trying to figure out what is the purpose of public school. The website https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov defines the purpose of public schools as "The mission of the public education system of this state is to ensure that all Texas children have access to a quality education that enables them to achieve their potential and fully participate now and in the future in the social, economic, and educational opportunities of our state and nation". To me and from my experience in a public school I would say the purpose of public schools is to ready students for the real world, teach them their basic life skills along with learning new concepts everyday and meeting new people. Public schools offer many different classes based on things you may need to know in the future for example finance classes (money matters), it may have seemed silly taking a finance class in high school but it will come in handy in the future when you need help managing your money. Public schooling may feel pointless in the beginning but in the end you come out knowing more than you expected and feeling ready to take on the world.
According to Charter For Compassion, a marginalized student is someone who identifies or feels "undeserved, disregarded, ostracized, harassed, persecuted, or sidelined in the community". In other words a student who feels left out of their community, these can be factored by race, ethnicity, gender, language, and etc. This comes from misconceptions people have set in place based on somebody else's beliefs or identity and students making fun of others because they are different from them. These factors cause many students to become outcast in their own community for being their selves. In order to change we must follow the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" so we must not judge a person because they are different from us.
