What Makes Great Teaching ?

Great teaching takes a lot as we have learned in this class. Teachers have to take a lot of things into consideration when teaching their students. Some of the questions we have been asked in this class has made us look back on how our previous teachers taught us and we found that some of them weren’t the best teachers in some situations or some handled their challenges in good ways. Know that this semester has come to an end, some qualities I think all teachers should have in order to be a great teacher consist of being caring, showing empathy, being patient, listening to their students, and being enthusiastic. Of course there are many more skills and qualities teachers need but we all have to start at the beginning. For this weeks module we were asked to list our TOP 5 strategies we enjoyed using in this class below you’ll find my list along with a description of how to use that strategy, the skills the strategy included, why it worked for me and a link where you can find the strategy at.

v  Selecting Golden Lines to determine importance

The task was after reading a an article, an essay, a piece of writing to chose four or five “golden lines” that impacted your learning, changed your thinking, supported your understanding or might have raised a question. This worked well for me because I was able to share what “golden lines” really stood out to me and explain how it impacted my understanding of the text.

v  What I wonder about

For this strategy we had to write down our prior thoughts about the questions before reading a text and explain why we thought the way we did and then after reading the text we had to go back and either still agree with your “before reading” or disagree and explain why you changed your answer. This strategy was very useful to me because it allowed me to use my prior knowledge to answer some of the questions but also learn more by going back after reading to expand on my answers.

v  DOs and DON’Ts

For this assignment we were asked to list three Dos and three DON’Ts of a topic and to include support for our choices. This strategy worked for me because I was able to take in more information by writing down what I found out abut the topic.

v  3 minute pause

This task provided a chance for students to stop and reflect on concepts and ideas that they have just been introduced to and make connections to prior knowledge or experiences and seek clarification. This worked well for me because I was able to stop and relate to this new information and continue my learning.

v  Black out poem

The task was to select keywords and phrases that were significant to you and black out the remainder of the text leaving you with a power poem that tells the reader what you thought was most important. This worked well for me because it helped me show what themes I gathered from the reading.
