What Lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

When we made the decision to be teachers we also made a promise to protect all of our students from anything that may come their way. In the article “Cultural Responsiveness Start with Real Caring” by Zaretta Hammond, an African American 5th grade boy is curled up in a ball crying in the corner of the classroom and the teacher did nothing. Although the article didn’t include the back story on why the student was crying, us teachers should never leave our students alone to cry. As Zaretta shared, we should offer a moment of compassion or a gesture of care to our students. Some of the words that I took note off while reading through this weeks module to create my Word It Out included words like challenges, motivate, care, family, push and connection.

My reasoning behind choosing some of these words like challenges is because as teachers we are going to face some challenges along the way the job may not always be easy and we should know this we were once students. Motivation, we all need a little motivation every once and a while some may need a little more. Lastly, Family your classroom is a family! All of your students need to know this everyone should feel welcomed and everyone should be treated the same. I will do right by every child in my future classroom by making those connections with every student, making my classroom a family and continuing to learn as much as I can so all of my students are treated equally and get the education they deserve.

  1. Hi Angelica, thank you for your nice comment! I totally agree a little motivation can do a lot for anybody you never know what someone is going through. Students need that love and care in a school setting and as their teachers we should be the one to provide it to them. And as you said this will encourage them to do better in school and actually enjoy coming to school. I’m so glad we get to learn how to do right by all of our students so we are fully prepared for our future students. We will all be great teachers because of it!
